B：With Korea's long history are there any famous places that I should visit? A：Absolutely. In fact there are a number of sites that have now been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites for their significance. As of 2015, there are 11 in total, with the first three recognized in 1995. They include Haeinsa Temple, where the first Korean woodblocks for the printing press were found, Jongmyo Shrine, which was built to honor Joseon ancestors and the oldest of its kind, and Bulguksa Temple, which is an 8th century Buddhist temple with amazing sculpted images of the Buddha and other gods. The remaining eight include the Baekje Historic Areas, which was added in 2015, Changdeokgung Palace, 3 Dolmen Sites, Gyeongju Historic Areas, Hahoe and Yangdong Historic Villages, Hwaseong Fortress, Namhansanseong, and the Royal Tombs of Joseon. Do any of these sites interest you? B：I've seen a number of Joseon sites already so how about the old temple that you mentioned? That sounds interesting. A：OK. Well first of all, it is a little far from Seoul. You will need to travel to the city of Gyeongju, which was the old Silla capital, in Gyeongsangbuk-do. From the main Gyeongju train station, you will need to find bus number 10 or 11 and travel about 1 hour out to the temple. Even though it is quite a distance, it is well worth the trip. The temple and grotto are interesting and beautiful. The history of the place may also be of interest. The temple has had a tough life over the centuries with numerous renovations and rebuilds due to invasions. All of that is explained when you get there. As well as the temple, there is Seokguram Grotto. This is a manmade grotto constructed from granite and includes a smaller entry chamber connected to a main chamber by a corridor. In this main chamber, you can see an incredible statue of the Buddha looking out towards the sea, as well as numerous other figures. The sculptures in this grotto are famous around the world and, according to the UNESCO website, are considered masterpieces of East Asian Buddhist art. As mentioned, as well as Bulguksa Temple, the general Gyeongju area has many historic Silla dynasty sites. It's like an open air museum down there.
